Tauko paikalla - Taking a break

Eilen olin tausta-avustajana tv-draamassa, ja kameraryhmän rakentaessa kuvaustilanteita meillä ekstroilla oli tyhjää aikaa käytettävänämme. Kahvittelimme, juttelimme ja puuhasimme omiamme. Minulla oli kynä ja paperia mukanani, joten pysäköin itseni sohvannurkkaan piirtelemään mm. tätä mielikuvituskaksitasoa. Kun luottaa omaan muistiinsa, saa aina myös epäillä havainto- ja hahmotuskykyään.

I was on a gig as a background extra on a tv drama yesterday, and while the crew were changing sets, we the extras spent our time having coffee, chatting and puttering about our business. I had my pencil and paper along, so I parked in the corner of the couch to draw, among other stuff, this imaginary biplane. When you rely on memory alone, you always get to doubt your ability of perception.

After the shoot I visited the studios of the illustrators Ossi Hiekkala (Archipictor), Jyrki Vainio, Stewart Gray and the graphic designer Heikki Sallinen. I enjoyed a cup of tea and admired the handiwork of the pros.

Sketches I've begun ages ago, but seldom get around to work further. Nobody seems to be wanting this stuff anyway, and as sometimes real work (the paying kind) interrupts these idle doodles, they tend to accumulate.

Niin, näitä lyijykynäluonnoksia on aloitettu aikojen kuluessa koko paljonkin, mutta koska kukaan tämänlaisesta työstä ei maksa, ja oikeat työt ovat tärkeämpiä, kuvat tahtovat jäädä kesken ja kasaantua hyllyyn.

Kesän jälkeen - After the summer

Joo, kiirettä on ollut. Paljon puuhaa, vähän tuloksia.

Lyijykynäluonnokset pitäisi joskus laittaa järjestykseen, ja yrittää saada niistä juttu tai pari viedyksi eteenpäin... Mutta ensin keskeneräiset työt pois, muuten kaikki viivästyy vielä lisää.

Tämä sivunpuolikas ei ole edes vielä luokassa "keskeneräiset": minulla ei ole tällä hetkellä aavistusta, mistä DC-3 on tulossa ja minne menossa. Luulen kuitenkin, että matkustajien joukossa on joku riidanhaastaja.

Yes, I've been busy. Lots to do, with little results.

I really should put my pencil sketches in some order some time, and try to advance a story or two... But first I'll have to finish the unfinished jobs, otherwise the delays will only get worse.

This half-page is not even "unfinished" yet: at the moment, I have no idea where the DC-3 is coming from, or where it is heading. I suspect there is a troublemaker among the passengers.

Aircraft are my speciality! - "Erikoistumisen" hyvät ja huonot puolet

Kuten tarkkaavaisemmat lukijat ovat jo havainneet, minua vaivaa erikoislaatuinen, joskaan ei erityisen harvinainen oireyhtymä: olen pohjattoman ihastunut lentokoneisiin. Tästäkin syystä on ollut ilo piirtää sarjakuvaa Esa Niskasen tekstiin, koska tiedän tapahtumien sijoittuvan edes kohtuullisessa määrin maanpinnan yläpuolelle. Saan samalla tekosyyn lähteä selaamaan referenssiaineistoja ja pitämään hauskaa esim. pienoismallien kanssa.

Toisaalta, kun käyttää paljon aikaa yhteen lavastuksen osaan, voivat toiset jäädä vähemmälle huomiolle. Tulevassa seikkailussahan sankarin reitille tulee este, kun panssarijoukot tulevat jyrinällä pihaan (keskeneräinen aukeama tässä).

Minä kun en tunne tankkeja, en ole ikinä tuntenut niitä kohtaan suurtakaan mielenkiintoa. Tuohon T-34:ään saattaa siis tulla vielä jokunenkin korjaus. Samoin on etsittävä ties mistä neuvostoarmeijan kesäunivormut vuodelta 1944. Ja katukuvaa samalta aikakaudelta. Ja naistenmuotia. Ja hevosia. Mutta ihan ensin puuhailen vähän näiden lentsikoiden kanssa: on niitä kuitenkin niin paljon tuon tarinan käänteissä mukana.

As my more perspicacious readers have already noticed, I have a peculiar, although not all that rare syndrome: I go all googly-eyed over aeroplanes. This is another reason I enjoy drawing comics for Esa Niskanen's scripts, because I know the drama unfolds often enough above the ground level. I also have a perfect excuse to go through reference material and have fun with scale models, for example.

Then again, when you spend a lot of time with a specific part of the background, other scenery can sometimes be neglected. In the forthcoming adventure the hero's escape is cut short by armored troops thundering in (see unfinished page spread).

You see, I do not know tanks, I have never found them particularly interesting. I expect to be making some corrections on that there T-34. Then I have to search for the summer garb of the Soviet army in 1944. And some period street scenery. and ladies' fashion. And horses. Anyways, first I'll amuse myself with these aeroplanes: there are enough of them in the story to  justify that.

Vesilentokone - waterplane

Pääsiäisen aikana löysin Yleisradion nettiarkistosta yhden vanhoista suosikkipakinoitsijoistani, Kai R. Lehtosen. Hänen ohjelmasarjansa Historiaa Pitkin Poikin viihdytti minua 1980- ja 1990-luvuilla, ja kuultavissa olevat ohjelmat viihdyttävät yhäkin: toiset aiheet eivät vanhene. Lehtosen ja hänen työryhmänsä kirjoittamat historiankirjat olivat kouluissa käytössä nuoruudessani, mutta silloin en vielä kiinnittänyt asiaan huomiota. Jälkeenpäin olen onnistunut löytämään kokoelman hänen radiotekstejään kokoelmassa Briljantti Juttu, sekä kaksi nuortenkirjaa Lentoralli ja Lentokonejärven Kummitus.

Lehtonen on siis myös yleisilmailuharrastaja, asia, joka tietenkin antaa jokseenkin kelle tahansa minun kirjoissani puoltopisteen. Toki nykyaikana lukija jo hymähtää 70-luvun tunnelmalle, joka kirjoista huokuu: koululaiset hankkivat kesäduunirahoilla lentolupakirjan ja vuokraavat koneita harrastaakseen... 2000-luvulla ajatus ei mene ihan niin helposti läpi lukijalla, joka on jo ehtinyt nähdä työelämää ja veroamaksavan kansalaisen arkea. Silloin ennenhän 100LL lentobensiinikin maksoi 33 penniä litra.

Lentokonejärven Kummitus joka tapauksessa innoitti minut piirtämään "vapaapäivänäni" tämän lyijykynäluonnoksen. Ehkä tätä tulee vielä viimeisteltyä ja väritettyäkin.

During the easter holidays I discovered one of my old favorite storytellers in the Finnish Broadcasting Company's radio archives. His series of broadcasts entertained me in the 80's and 90's, and the material  hasn't lost its flavor: some topics are definitely perennial. Lehtonen's team wrote the history books that were used in my school, although I didn't notice that at the time. Afterwards I found a collection of his broadcast scripts and two books for young readers, telling about teenage aviation enthusiasts. 

The writer is also a general aviation buff, which gives a person instant bonus points in my view. A modern reader will chuckle reading about Seventies high school kids who work summers and with the copious amounts of cash accrued, get their PPL licenses, and then can even afford to rent planes at the airport... this is hardly believable for a 21st-century reader who has some experience of the work environment and the everyday life of a common taxpayer. Even 100LL avgas cost next to nothing, back in the olden days.

Anyways, one of the stories inspired me to draw this pencil sketch on my "day off". I might work on it later, maybe even add some color.
