Sketches I've begun ages ago, but seldom get around to work further. Nobody seems to be wanting this stuff anyway, and as sometimes real work (the paying kind) interrupts these idle doodles, they tend to accumulate.

Niin, näitä lyijykynäluonnoksia on aloitettu aikojen kuluessa koko paljonkin, mutta koska kukaan tämänlaisesta työstä ei maksa, ja oikeat työt ovat tärkeämpiä, kuvat tahtovat jäädä kesken ja kasaantua hyllyyn.

Mannertenväliset vaikutteet - Intercontinental influences (Pencil dumping for ever)

Taannoisen Frazetta-suitsutukseni jälkeen tulin jouten luonnostelleeksi myös vaatimattoman pätkän sarjakuvaa, puhtaasti harjoituksen vuoksi.
After having raved about Frank Frazetta in my recent post, I idly sketched a modest fragment of a comic story, for the sake of practice.

Kirjastosta löysin nipun Russ Manningin vanhoja Magnus -kokoelmia uusintapainoksina, ja muistin lapsuuteni kultaiset ajat, jolloin katselin lumoutuneena Manningin huippukiilloitettuja piirrosviivoja. Ja seuraukset ovat arvattavissa.
At the library, I found reprint collections of Russ Manning's old Magnus Robot Fighter stories, which reminded me of the halcyon days of my childhood, when I used to pore over Manning's polished lines. You can guess the consequences.

Jo aikaa sitten tulin hahmotelleeksi tyypillisen kohtauksen vanhan ystäväni, belgialaisen Francois Walthéryn Natasha -sarjakuvan seikkailuista. Tämä luonnos ei luultavasti tule kuitenkaan koskaan etenemään tämän pitemmälle, joten liitän sen tähän samaan päivitykseen.
Some time back I doodled a rather typical scene from the adventures of the stewardess Natacha, created by my old dear friend from Belgium, Francois Walthéry. This sketch is not likely to ever proceed any further, so I'll just add it to this post.

Lyijäripurkua, aina vain - Pencil dumping, on and on

Sairaspäivä. Kaikeksi onneksi nyt ei ole kiirekeikkaa lisäämässä yksinäisen ahertajan kuormaa. Joten skannaan vanhoja lyijäriluonnoksia odottamaan, milloin joku niistä pääsee eteenpäin. Sohvan vieressä on kyllä pätkä Mikko Ketolan uutta käsikirjoitusta Anni Isotalo -sarjakuva-albumiin Mystikkojen matka (alun n. 15 sarjakuvasivuun), ja Esa Niskasen osaksi piirretty ilmasotatarina, mutta juuri nyt ne eivät etene, ei näillä lihaksilla.

Sick day. Luckily there is no urgent job to overload the lone worker. So, I'll just scan some old pencil sketches to wait for something to move along. There is a script from Mikko Ketola for the first 15 pages of the next graphic novel in our Anni Isotalo series, by the couch, and the partly inked air war story by Esa Niskanen, but for the moment, they simply have to be left till later.

Tänä viikonloppuna Helsingissä on sarjakuvafestivaalit. Sopivasti vauhtiin päästyäni tungen tänne näkyviin lyijykynähahmotelmia sekalaisista pikkujutuista, joita en ole saanut tänäkään vuonna eteenpäin. Pysykää kanavalla.

It is the Helsinki Comics Festival weekend. Feeling I'm on a roll here, I'll keep parading these unassorted sketches for stuff I haven't been advancing one jot for yet another year. Stay tuned.

Lyijykynäilyä harjoituksen vuoksi - Penciling for practice

Olen masentanut itseäni lukemalla vanhojen ammattilaisten haastatteluja. Piirtäjien on ilmeisesti aina pitänyt olla yli-ihmisiä, jotka silmää nopeammin pyöräyttävät 22 sivua sarjakuvaa, jotta saisivat kupillisen riisiä ja matonkulman päänaluseksi. Näiden sankaritarujen lukemisen jälkeen on yhä vain turhemman oloista yrittää lyijätä jotain, mikä menee tussikynävaiheessa piloille, eikä tämmöiselle tietenkään olisi ostavia markkinoitakaan. Joten harjoittelu on hyödytöntä.

I have been reading interviews of the old pros, and this has rather depressed me. Apparently, the cartoonists have always had to be superhuman performers, turning out comics pages by the dozen just to afford a bowl of rice and a carpet corner to sleep on. After reading these heroic tales it is all the more frustrating to even try to pencil something that will only turn to crap at the inking stage, and of course, there would not be any market for the stuff anyhow. So, it is useless to practice.

Lopettamattomat sarjakuvat - Unfinished comics

Kun näitä näkyy olevan jonkin verran varastossa, niin puran  jotain tänne. Olisipa nopean kirjoittamisen lahja, ja puhtaaksipiirtämisen taito.

As these seem to be stockpiling otherwise, I'll just unload some here. If only I had the talent of fast writing, and the skill to ink neatly.

Kesän jälkeen - After the summer

Joo, kiirettä on ollut. Paljon puuhaa, vähän tuloksia.

Lyijykynäluonnokset pitäisi joskus laittaa järjestykseen, ja yrittää saada niistä juttu tai pari viedyksi eteenpäin... Mutta ensin keskeneräiset työt pois, muuten kaikki viivästyy vielä lisää.

Tämä sivunpuolikas ei ole edes vielä luokassa "keskeneräiset": minulla ei ole tällä hetkellä aavistusta, mistä DC-3 on tulossa ja minne menossa. Luulen kuitenkin, että matkustajien joukossa on joku riidanhaastaja.

Yes, I've been busy. Lots to do, with little results.

I really should put my pencil sketches in some order some time, and try to advance a story or two... But first I'll have to finish the unfinished jobs, otherwise the delays will only get worse.

This half-page is not even "unfinished" yet: at the moment, I have no idea where the DC-3 is coming from, or where it is heading. I suspect there is a troublemaker among the passengers.
